By train: which station to use

The most practical railhead is Pathankot Junction, about 85 km away and connected to Delhi, Amritsar, and Jammu by mainline trains. From Pathankot, hire a taxi or take a bus for the three-hour drive to Dharamshala. For a slower, scenic option, the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway runs from Pathankot through the valley, with stops such as Kangra Mandir and Nagrota close to Sidhpur.

By road: driving and buses

Dharamshala is well connected by road. Volvo and HRTC buses run overnight from Delhi (ISBT Kashmere Gate) and take 10–12 hours. Self-drivers from Delhi take the NH44 toward Pathankot, then the hill road via Kangra. From Chandigarh the drive is about 6–7 hours. The final stretch into the hills is winding, so allow extra time and avoid night driving in the monsoon.
