If Triund is Dharamshala’s most famous trek, Kareri Lake is its most rewarding. This glacial lake at around 2,934 m sits in a high meadow beneath the Dhauladhar ridge, fed by snowmelt streams and ringed by shepherd trails. It takes more effort than Triund, which is exactly why it stays quieter. Here is everything you need to plan it properly.

The route
Getting to the trailhead
Drive from Dharamshala to Kareri village via Ghera, about an hour to ninety minutes depending on road conditions. Taxis are easy to arrange from Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj. Starting early is worth it: the trail is mostly open in its lower sections and the morning light in the valley is lovely.
Kareri village to the lake
The trail follows the Nyund stream almost the whole way, crossing it on wooden and stone bridges through oak and rhododendron forest, past the shepherd hamlet of Reoti, before climbing more steeply to the meadow that holds the lake. The final approach opens onto the lake with the Dhauladhar wall rising behind it, with the small Shiva temple on the ridge above completing the scene.
One day or two?
Trekkers love using Sidhpur as a base: rest well before and after the trail. See rooms at The Divine Hima.
Most trekkers camp near the lake or at Reoti and return the next day, which keeps the pace relaxed and lets you catch the lake in still morning light, when it is at its most beautiful. Strong walkers do it as a single long day from the village, around 8 to 10 hours of walking. If you camp, carry layers even in summer: nights at the lake are cold year-round.
Best time for the Kareri Lake trek
April to June brings green meadows and a full lake from snowmelt. September to November offers the clearest skies and crisp views. The lake often freezes between December and March, and the trail can hold snow, so winter attempts need experience and proper gear. The monsoon months of July and August make stream crossings risky and are best avoided.
Kareri Lake vs Triund
Triund is shorter, busier and better serviced, a half-day climb with cafes on the trail. Kareri is longer, wilder and much quieter, a proper valley trek to an actual alpine lake. If you have done Triund or want fewer crowds, Kareri is the better choice. Many visitors do both in one trip with a rest day in between.
Practical tips
- Hire a local guide in Kareri village if you are new to Himalayan trails; the route has a few unmarked forks.
- Carry water purification and snacks; there are no cafes past the village, unlike Triund.
- Respect the lake and temple: no litter, no swimming, and pack out everything you carry in.
- Mobile signal is patchy past Kareri village, so download offline maps beforehand.
